Scratch Scores
For those of you interested in how CSS in
calculated and those that feel hard done by whenever 0.1 gets added to your
handicap here’s a brief guide.
The
Standard Scratch Score (SSS) of a course is predetermined, and is defined as the
score which a scratch player is expected to return in ideal conditions over a
measured course. At Oak Park off the back tees, the SSS is 70 (coincidentally
the same as the par).
The
Competition Scratch Score (CSS) is calculated (fortunately, by the computer)
from the results of each qualifying competition. For the purposes of the CSS
calculation, category 4 golfers (those with a handicap of 21 or over) are
ignored. (Note, this is not quite the same as Division 3 players. Oak Park
divisions are purely for prize allocation, and do not correspond to
handicapping cateogories).
The
percentage of players scoring two over SSS and better (including
disqualifications and no returns) is then calculated. i.e. the percentage of
the field recording a nett 72 or better.
This
percentage is then looked up on a table to determine how much to alter the SSS
by to give the CSS.
The
lookup table varies slightly depending on the number of players in category 1,
2 and 3, but for a general example which matches the Oak Park playing profile :
If
33% or more of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or better, then
CSS is one less than SSS.
If
between 16% and 32% of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or
better, then CSS the same as SSS.
If
between 12% and 15% of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or
better, then CSS is one more than SSS.
If
between 8% and 11% of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or better,
then CSS is two more than SSS.
If
between 6% and 7% of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or better,
then CSS is three more than SSS.
If
5% or less of the category 1,2,3 players have scored nett 72 or better, then
CSS is three more than SSS, but the competition is deemed reduction only (i.e.
handicaps will not be raised).
So
for the Founders trophy, 29% of the field scored nett 72 or better, so the CSS
is the same as the SSS of 70. The number of players returning nett 71 and nett
72 make a significant difference to the calculation.
